Starting in October 2007, selected customers will receive a TD Canada Trust Access Card embedded with a computer chip that provides added security. Chip technology will be put in place for all TD Canada Trust Access Cards, making a secure payment system even more secure. While your current Access Card with a magnetic stripe will continue to be a secure payment method, these new Access Cards are designed to better protect you against fraud.

    Chip Technology

  1. What is an Access Card with chip technology?
    • The new Access Card will be embedded with a microchip that stores information in a secure encrypted format that is virtually impossible to copy.

  1. Why is chip technology being introduced?
    • The changeover to chip technology is part of a nationwide initiative that all Canadian financial institutions, payment systems and merchants are embracing in order to help better protect Canadian consumers.

  1. How does chip technology help protect me from fraud?
    • Using encryption, chip technology makes it virtually impossible for the information on your Access Card to be copied or accessed by unauthorized users when it is used at a chip-enabled terminal or ABM.

  1. What’s new about my Access Card with chip technology?
    • When you make a purchase, simply insert your Access Card into the chip terminal, rather than swiping it through a reader, and follow the prompts. Your Access Card will remain in the terminal throughout the transaction.
    • Your new Access Card will have an expiry date. A new Access Card will be issued to you a few weeks before your current card expires.
    • You can now change your PIN at TD Green Machines.

  1. What isn’t changing?
    • Your PIN will not change. Simply continue to use the same PIN you have now for your Access Card.
    • Your Access Card will still be accepted by merchants that haven’t switched to chip technology, and in countries that don’t use chip technology.
    • Access Cards with a magnetic stripe will remain a secure payment method. You will still be able to make debit purchases with a magnetic stripe Access Card for years to come.
    • Automated Banking Machines (ABMs), EasyWeb Internet banking and EasyLine telephone banking can be accessed in exactly the same way they are now.

  1. When will I receive my new chip Access Card?
    • This change will be phased in gradually, after the completion of a trial period which starts in October 2007.
    • Both the new chip terminals and the old magnetic stripe terminals will be used over the next several years.

  1. Can I request a new Access Card?
    • The transition to chip technology will take place over several years and there is no need to request a new Access Card with chip technology. After the trial period in Kitchener-Waterloo is completed, you will receive an Access Card with chip technology automatically when it is time to replace the one you have now. Access Cards with magnetic stripes are still secure, and will be accepted at all store locations, whether or not they have a chip-enabled terminal.

  1. Do I still need to protect my PIN?
    • Yes, it is important to always protect your PIN.
    • Do not let anyone else know or use your PIN.
    • Never write it down.
    • Use your hand or body to shield the keypad when you enter your PIN.
    • Make transactions when and where you feel secure. If in doubt, don’t use your Access Card.
    • When a transaction is complete, put your Card back in your wallet and take your transaction record.

  1. How will I know whether a retailer has a chip-enabled terminal?
    • Simply follow the prompts on the terminal. The terminal will prompt you to insert your Access Card or the merchant may direct you to do so. Both the new chip terminals and the old magnetic stripe terminals will be used over the next several years.

  1. How do I make a purchase with my new Access Card at a retailer that doesn’t have a chip-enabled terminal?
    • Your new Access Card will have a secure magnetic stripe, just like your current card.
    • In stores that don’t have a chip-enabled terminal, simply swipe your Access Card for debit payments as you do now.

  1. Will my new Access Card work outside of Canada?
    • Yes. Your card will continue to be accepted in all countries that already accept Access Cards using either the chip or the magnetic stripe.
